Worked example: {a|b|c} {d|e} = 3 × 2 = 6 combinations. Nested groups count recursively: {a|{b|c}} = 1 (a) + 2 (b|c) = 3.
Combinations counts every choice (with duplicates); distinct outputs counts unique results — equal unless the same text can be produced more than one way, e.g. {a|a|b} has 3 combinations but 2 distinct outputs.
